abstract = "Due to the location in a subtropical region, Rio Grande do Sul
state (RS) is under the influence of various meteorological
phenomena capable of generating precipitation, among which stand
out the Mesoescale Convective Systems (MCS). The MCS are defined
as convective cloud clusters and are also responsible for most
severe weather conditions in the RS. Hail is the most destructive
of these events and cause direct impacts on the states economy,
mainly focused on agrobusiness. Therefore the aim of this study
was to evaluate the characteristics and impacts of MCS more
frequents to affect RS from 2004 to 2008 and that have caused
hail, using ForTrACC application, raw images from the GOES
satellite and data from RS Civil Defense. Ten MCS of continental,
diurnal and frontal origin (MCSHAIL-CDF) were analyzed and the
results showed that MCSHAIL-CDF were formed mainly between the
western RS and northeastern Argentina, but there were seasonal
differences. Generally was observed preferential displacement to
eastward, however with seasonal variations in relation to the
predominant quadrant, northeastward in the cold months and
southeastward in the warm months. In total 31 municipalities were
hit by hail generated by the MCSHAIL-CDF between 2004 and 2008,
and 10 of these reported damage in agriculture.",
